One Fall Changed It All

One moment can change your life forever…

It all began with a basketball game. The ball bounced off the rim. Two athletes leaped into the air simultaneously. In mere moments two bodies collided midair. Seconds later a body could be heard crashing against the concrete.

Multiple MRI’s and X-Rays later, a frayed tendon, bone contusion, and months of splinting, led to unreal muscle atrophy. What took a decade of weightlifting to build, was smashed to pieces within two years.

From Invincible to Pudgy

For a long time, I felt that I was invincible. I was 114 pounds going into college, standing fiercely at 5 feet and 9 inches. I was a marvel of human engineering. 🙂

A bad breakup pushed me to make some major changes in my life. I picked up a dumbbell and I got to work. Two years later I didn’t grow in height, but I made up for it in weight. I tipped the scales at 188 pounds while maintaining a 12.5 % body fat percentage. I pushed the edges of my maximum genetic potential.

As you can imagine, having my body revert to 203 pounds at 21% Body Fat post-injury was a catastrophic change. I went from dumbbell pressing 130 pounds in each hand to barely managing to press 15 pounds in each hand. It was debilitating experience not only physically, but mentally as well.

A Long Road of Healing Ahead

I felt like I lived in a splint. Often times we take for granted the fact that we have two fully functional hands. Sometimes all it takes is one injury to put it all in perspective.

Months of physical therapy immersed me into a subset of patients with all types of joint and muscle calamities. I carefully observed and took note of their conditions and how they reacted to them. I saw the therapy they engaged in, and the way their bodies responded to it. I began to quickly realize, that my disability could have been a whole lot worst. It was an insightful learning experience, which allowed me to gather a new perspective on joint and muscles.

Our worst day, is often times a day others would smile about. I discovered it’s all about adopting a new mindset. With the proper mindset, you can truly achieve anything.

Your only defeated if you quit.
